Noble sportsman – Mercedes-AMG EQE 43: flextime, sport at the same time

Mercedes remains true to its line of streamlined, smooth electric cars: After the e-flagship EQS, neither the wind nor the eye gets caught on the EQE. “Krone” engine editor Stephan Schätzl has taken on the Mercedes-AMG EQE 43, about which two aspects are particularly exciting: What is the EQE like as the little brother of the EQS? And: How is the Stromer as an AMG? The answers are in the video here!

The streamlined impression of the EQE corresponds to the EQS, but it is a whole corner shorter (if you even want to speak of a corner with this body). Of the record cW value, 0.22 remains instead of 0.20, the wheelbase also extends 3.12 meters, nine centimeters less, the length of 4.95 meters is almost 30 cm below the EQS value Hinges in the roof restrict the headroom of the rear seat passengers too much, so people over 1.80 meters tall don’t touch their heads, at least when the optional panoramic glass roof is installed. The legroom is generous, but the posture of the legs is because of it of the high floor is somewhat unnatural. The look of the body is not too bad.The fact that it is an AMG can be seen above all from the vertical chrome strips on the plastic field that is supposed to represent the radiator grille. If you know that di These strips generally stand for AMG.Cockpit from the EQSThe cockpit corresponds to that of the EQS, the hyperscreen as a complete glazing of the dashboard with displays underneath is available for around 10,000 euros extra. In this case, the passenger can watch Netflix on their own screen. The test car has a very natural-looking, yacht-like wooden panel in the form of a hyperscreen with an attached speedometer display and a central touchscreen. The touch elements on the steering wheel are essential, and here in the AMG EQE 43 they are no better to use than in other current Mercedes model series. The special feature of the steering wheel is the thick steering wheel rim on which you have Alcantara in your hand. The most striking and with the sports seats the most important AMG tool in the interior.AMG power, PlayStation soundThe drive power of the EQE 43 is quite worthy of the AMG designation: two engines (the rear one with two times three phases is particularly powerful) together make 350 kW or 476 hp and deliver a maximum torque of 860 Nm to all four wheels. This enables a standard sprint value of 4.2 seconds. As expected, the start is powerful and makes you forget the approximately 2.5 tons unladen weight. Not AMG-like: The top speed is limited to 210 km/h. Not AMG-like either: artificial engine sound can be played back, discreet in Sport mode, noticeable in Sport+ mode. The sound world is called “Authentic”, which couldn’t be further from what’s on offer. The sound can even be heard when stationary, which is more reminiscent of tinnitus than an engine idling, especially on Sport+. The sound is also distributed outside via loudspeakers in the bumper. Genuine AMG suspension The three-chamber air suspension with adaptive dampers comes from AMG or from the GT four-door. It gives the EQE 43 a very solid, sporty handling. With the optional 21-inch mixed tires (265/295), the 2.5-tonner handles extremely well and hardly understeers. You wouldn’t believe it’s weight, even when cornering. Hats off! As standard, the rear wheels steer up to 3.6 degrees (with the standard EQE you have the choice between 4.5 and ten degrees, because of different tire widths without a price difference). The steering requires significant effort, especially on Sport+, which suggests a particularly good feeling for the road. In fact, there is still room for improvement. Above all, the indicated locking in the middle position is somewhat irritating. Even more irritating is the life of its own that the brake pedal develops. The pressure point and pedal position vary with the recuperation, which is uncomfortable. In principle, the issue of recuperation has been well resolved, and the levels can be set using the steering wheel paddles: no recuperation (coasting), normal recuperation (like a combustion engine after decelerating), strong recuperation (one pedal , to stand, works fine) and automatic. The latter takes a lot of getting used to and is more confusing than useful in everyday life. Fast, but not super-fast charging The 400 volt battery in the vehicle floor stores 90.5 kWh, it also comes – like practically the entire technology/platform – from the EQS. The larger variant has no place in the EQE due to the shorter wheelbase. In the EQE 43, Mercedes specifies a WLTP range of 533 kilometers. In the test, it was more like 350 kilometers, with an average consumption read from the on-board computer of a good 25 kWh/100 kilometers. The maximum charging power is 170 kW, but this can only be achieved if you arrive at the charging station with a preconditioned battery. The Mercedes charges with alternating current as standard with 11 kW, optionally with 22 kW. Incidentally, the EQE with the greatest range is the rear-wheel drive EQE 350+ with 215 kW/292 hp and a range of 669 kilometers. A word on processing The Mercedes-AMG EQE 43 makes handling a high-quality impression and triggers a feeling of well-being. But: In the test car, an audible crackle came from the dashboard. Whether this is an isolated case or a real problem cannot be clarified at this point. In addition, the bodywork had some noticeable processing defects. Body parts that are unclean to each other, or paint noses. Since there were already frequent reports of processing defects with the EQS (including rows of cracked windscreens), this is more of an indication of problems. The pricesThe EQE starts at 67,800 euros, the AMG EQE 43 is 105,240 euros, before you go through the surcharge list. The test car comes to almost 130,000 euros. FahrzitIf you don’t need the better space and prefer to drive yourself instead of being chauffeured, you can easily prefer the EQE to the EQS. Technically they are identical, they can also be equipped in almost the same way. The AMG feeling is rudimentary in the EQE 43. However, a true fan of classic AMGs will have a hard time. And the sound can only be a misunderstanding. Why? Fine driving characteristics “Reasonable” sports sedan EQS class feeling Why not? Quality problems on the test car Small trunk Or maybe …… Polestar 2, Tesla Model S, Audi e-tron GT
