The Oscar-winning Kaijū action film from Japan is set shortly after World War II and shows Godzilla suddenly appearing on the coast of Tokyo. Soldier Koichi is one of the first to encounter the gigantic monster. He wants to confront the sinister dinosaur in order to clear his conscience after the kamikaze pilot escaped his true fate.

Takashi Yamazaki directed and wrote the screenplay for “Godzilla Minus One,” which he spent three years writing. Yamazaki also worked on the visual effects as a special effects artist and was awarded the “Best Visual Effects” award at the 2024 Academy Awards.

In an interview with the social film platform Letterboxd, Yamazaki described the style of filmmaking at the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023 as follows:

The process of making a kaiju film is like a kagura, a dance to please and appease the gods, where you put those problems into the form of a kaiju to help process some of those worries, almost like a ceremony.

If this poetic description still hasn’t convinced you of the Japanese masterpiece: On the review platform Rotten Tomatoes, “Godzilla Minus One” received a full 98% of critics’ reviews and 98% of audience votes, which is almost a perfect score!

In the current Netflix Top 10, the new monster film entered this week at number 7. We recommend watching “Godzilla Minus One” on Netflix if you don’t just want action with impressive effects, but also an exciting story! You don’t need any prior knowledge of the previous “Godzilla” films.
