Nokia, the Finnish telecoms giant, announced Tuesday that it is suing Amazon in five jurisdictions around the world, including the United States and India, for infringing patents on video-related technologies.
The company said it was also suing HP, formerly Hewlett-Packard, in a US court, also for using Nokia video technologies without authorization.
“Sometimes the legal process is the only way to respond to companies that choose not to respect the rules followed and respected by others,” said Arvin Patel, head of licensing at Nokia, in a statement on the group’s website.
He said Nokia had been “in discussions with Amazon and HP for a number of years.”
Lawsuits against Amazon have also been filed in Germany, Great Britain and before the Court of Justice of the European Union, which specializes in intellectual property issues.
The complaints relate to Amazon’s Prime Video service as well as devices that Nokia claims infringe its patents on “video compression, content streaming, content recommendation and equipment-related aspects,” according to the communicated.
Nokia has highlighted that the streaming market is expected to reach $300 billion by 2027, denouncing what it sees as a disconnect between those who have invested in the development of the technology “and those who benefit the most from it”.
The company said it has agreements on these technologies with Apple, Samsung and other device makers.
“We prefer to reach amicable agreements with companies that rely on our technology, and our door remains open to constructive and good faith negotiations,” said Mr. Patel.
Contacted by AFP, Amazon refused to comment on a current legal case.
Nokia said earlier this month it would cut up to 14,000 jobs due to falling profits from weakening demand for its 5G equipment in North America.
