In order to stand out from the crowd of mid-range cell phones, a model needs a unique selling point. The Nokia G60 comes with several such special features. That starts with the purchase. So you can buy the cell phone quite regularly from Amazon and Co., the recommended retail price for the cell phone, which was released in autumn 2022, is 349 euros. But there is also the option of subscribing to the smartphone via “Nokia Circular”.

You then pay 15 euros per month for the device. You have to keep it for at least three months, after which you can cancel the subscription at any time or exchange the G60 for another Nokia cell phone. If the device is defective or stolen from you, according to HMD Global as a subscriber you can easily get a replacement. The longer you use the G60, the more loyalty points you collect, which you can donate to charities and sustainable projects via Nokia Circular.

The Nokia G60 is not only breaking new ground with the subscription model, the design is also striking. According to HMD Global, the back consists of 60 percent recycled plastic. Sure, the G60 isn’t the first device to be built from sustainable materials. Samsung uses old fishing nets in the Galaxy S22. However, the proportion here is rather small, for example only the suspensions for certain keys are made of recycled material.

Design and finish: Built to last

We have never seen such a high proportion of recycled materials in the mobile phone sector as in the G60. Nokia’s approach is commendable, but the Nokia G60 reminds us a little of recycled toilet paper. It serves its purpose, but it’s rough, and not exactly eye candy. The color “ice” looks like a dingy white. If you don’t like that, you should go for the black model. The use of a teardrop notch also causes design deductions. In the meantime, punchhole cameras have also become standard for cell phones for less than 400 euros.

In terms of sustainability, Nokia also does not include a power adapter in the scope of delivery. A USB C cable is included, but it has a USB C connector at both ends, so the cable is not compatible with old USB power supplies. You need to buy a USB C power adapter or use another cable.

What does the Nokia G60 have to offer from a technical point of view? The screen is 6.58 inches and has a reasonably high resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels. Individual pixels cannot be seen. The viewing angles are wide, but the display could be a bit brighter. You can have problems reading the screen in sunlight, especially outdoors. Unfortunately, it is only an LCD panel and not an OLED screen, such as the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G and the Samsung Galaxy A33 5G offer in this price range.

The processor is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 5G chip, which works in many models in this price range – including the Poco X4 Pro. Its performance is completely sufficient for games and everyday tasks, but other chipsets offer more power – such as the Google Tensor that works in the Pixel 6a. The device memory measures 128 gigabytes and can be expanded using a microSD card.

So far so ordinary. However, there are still a few special features:

The factory operating system is an unchanged Android 12. Updates to Android 13 and Android 14 are planned, and the cell phone should also receive monthly security patches for three years. That didn’t work in our test. Our device was at the security level of August 2022 for the entire test period. Apparently, however, it was a tragic individual fate. There is evidence online that the device is now up to date.

What is annoying is the triple assignment of the power switch. It not only functions as a power button, but can also call up the Google Assistant with a long press. A fingerprint sensor is also integrated into the button. In the test, however, we often accidentally called up the Google Assistant when unlocking. After all, you can disable the option in the settings.

camera

For photo and video recordings, the Nokia G60 offers a triple camera on the back consisting of a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 5-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The main camera takes decent pictures, at least during the day. In dim surroundings, on the other hand, you need a steady hand to take one or the other successful snapshot with the night mode.

battery life

The Nokia G60 draws power from a 4,500 mAh battery that can be charged with a maximum of 20 watts. The mobile phone does not set a new speed record when charging from the socket. But you don’t have to recharge too often, the manufacturer gives the battery life as 2 days. A value that corresponded to our experience in the test.

alternatives

If you are looking for a phone with a similar length of software support in this price range, you should take a look at the Google Pixel 6a. Unlike the Nokia G60, this also has an OLED screen, also supports eSIM and is powered by a faster processor. A shortcoming in comparison: The screen only has a maximum resolution of 90 Hertz and not 120 as with the Nokia G60.

Those who care about “sustainability” will also find an alternative in the Fairphone 4. The mobile phone is a bit more expensive, but designed for sustainability through and through. It is largely modular and can be easily repaired. The manufacturer also promises you software updates over five years!
