Nominated in five Goya categories, this Spanish film starring Penélope Cruz finally unveils its first trailer

In theaters on July 5, À contretemps recently unveiled a first trailer. Between its sensitive subject, its frenetic pace and the interpretation of the talented Penélope Cruz, this Spanish film nominated for the Goyas could be the slap of the summer.

Rafa (Luis Tosar, three-time Goya winner) is a lawyer with strong social convictions. When a new file is entrusted to him, he engages in a race against time to find the missing mother of a child, otherwise the little girl will be placed in a home. After midnight, nothing will be possible.

Her investigation will lead her to cross paths with Azucena (the essential Penélope Cruz), a woman unfairly threatened with expulsion whose only hope lies in the popular revolt she is trying to instigate.

While the paths of these two characters progress in parallel, the streets of Madrid find themselves inhabited by an unprecedented uprising, animated by the anger of a whole people left behind.

A relentless thriller tinged with political and social commitment

For his first film as a director, the Spanish actor Juan Diego Botto summons the main rules of the “film-dossier”, in the direct line of Dark Waters, Goliath or Black Box. Caught in a frantic race against time, its protagonists (brilliantly embodied by two legendary actors) fight for their rights and freedoms, but above all to bring the truth to light against organizations whose power dominates them.

In addition to the eloquent speeches and the chases in the streets of Madrid, À contretemps shines with a harsh, even cruel realism, both in its themes and in its settings. From unsanitary apartments to courts, to law firms, the film of Juan Diego Botto draws its strength from the anger caused by injustice and recalls, through its realistic and quasi-documentary treatment, Maïwenn’s powerful Poliss.

A real cry of distress, vibrating with strength and the desire for justice, À contretemps could well be one of the unmissable films of the summer. To be discovered in theaters from July 5.
