Nordahl Lelandais: how old will he be when he can get out of prison?

The verdict was delivered this Friday, February 18: Nordahl Lelandais was sentenced to life imprisonment with 22 years of security for the murder of Maëlys de Araujo. Until when, however, will he be imprisoned?

After more than two weeks of a trying trial for those close to Maëlys de Araujo, that’s it, the verdict has come. Nordahl Lelandais was sentenced this Friday, February 18, 2022 to the Life imprisonment with 22 years of security for the murder of little Maëlys, 8, on the night of August 26 to 27, 2017. This sentence – the heaviest he faced – follows a first sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment for the murder of Corporal Arthur Noyer in April 2017, for which Nordahl Lelandais had already been convicted in May 2021. Following this conviction, there is still the possibility for the accused and the victim’s family to appeal within 10 days following the verdict if the latter does not suit them.

Cécile Danré, senior police-justice reporter at BFMTV, also specifies on the channel that Nordahl Lelandais hasit’s been four years pre-trial detention which will be deducted from his overall sentence, and that the sentence of 22 years in prison for the murder of Maëlys will not be added to the 20 years in prison required for the murder of Arthur Noyer. Nordahl Lelandais will therefore spend a minimum of 18 years in prison, during which time he will be prohibited from applying for parole. The former dog handler having turned 39 this Friday, February 18, he will therefore be at least 57 years old when he can leaveat the earliest, from prison.

Nordahl Lelandais turns 39 on the day of the verdict

If Nordahl Lelandais wants to have a chance of getting out of prison after serving a minimum sentence of 18 years, he will have to be evaluated by experts and prove that it has changed during his incarceration, prove that he is no longer a danger to society“explains Cécile Danré. The conviction, eagerly awaited by those close to Maëlys, will not, however, make us forget the sinister revelations made by the accused during the trial. Nordahl Lelandais indeed confirmed having “voluntarily killed Maëlys“although he had initially denied the facts. Confessions difficult to hear which will have at least led to the maximum sentence required so that, four years after the murder, justice is finally done.
