It is not uncommon for actors or actresses to lie to get a role that is close to their heart. A star of the Matrix saga to play in front of the camera of one of the greatest filmmakers in the world or Anne Hathaway to appear in the credits of a film winning three Oscars did not hesitate, for example, to take liberties with the truth to be engaged.
Actor Paul Mescal is also one of those stars who told a big lie to get an important role. In this case, for the 27-year-old Irishman, that of Connell Waldron in the excellent series Normal People, a show unveiled in 2020 that we strongly recommend because it should capsize you.
Adapted from the eponymous novel by Sally Rooney, Normal People, which is one of those series that speaks very well about mental health, tells the complicated relationship between Marianne and Connell. A relationship that spans from their high school years in a small town in the west of Ireland to their university studies at Trinity College, Dublin.
Throughout the series’ twelve episodes, Connell’s character is seen driving a car a lot. Small problem, when auditioning for the role, Paul Mescal did not have his driving license. His agent then had the idea of lying to production so as not to see the job slip under their noses!

At the microphone of the Entertainment Weekly sitePaul Mescal says: “My agent told me, ‘We’re not going to miss this job because you can’t drive. So I’m going to tell production that you know how to drive and between now and filming, you’re going to have as many lessons as possible.”” The actor followed the advice to the letter, obtained the famous permit and was able to star in Normal People as if nothing had happened!
