North Korea cuts ties: Kim has roads to South Korea torn down

Kim demolishes roads to South Korea

A few days ago, South Korea reported that the North wanted to cut transport connections between the two countries. Now North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un appears to be getting serious. Initial work is underway to demolish the roads at the border.

According to South Korean information, North Korea is preparing to destroy sections of unused road connections between the two countries in the north. The South Korean military said Monday it was monitoring various activities in North Korea that appeared to be preparations to demolish roads. Among other things, shields were installed behind which work was taking place. General Staff spokesman Lee Sung Joon said demolition work could begin as early as Monday.

The destruction of the ties would be in line with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s desire to break off all remaining relations with South Korea and cement the neighboring country’s classification as North Korea’s main enemy.

Lee said the South Korean military also believes the North may try to launch a space rocket. From the perspective of the United Nations, this would be a prohibited test of long-range missile technology. Lee also said North Korea could rely on “small provocations” to increase pressure on Seoul.

North Korea recently accused the South of using drones three times this month to drop propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang. On Sunday, North Korea’s defense ministry said it had issued preliminary instructions to put artillery and other army units on the shared border on standby to open fire. An attack could turn the entire South Korean territory into a pile of ash.
