North Korean weapons tests – South Korea and US begin military exercise – News

  • South Korea and the United States began their annual joint military exercises on Monday.
  • The field training is also part of the exercises again because of the increase in readiness in view of North Korea’s increased weapons tests, South Korean government officials said on Monday.

The summer exercises called Ulchi Freedom Shield, which lasted until September 1, were resumed at the urging of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. When he took office in May, he announced that he would “normalize” joint exercises and increase deterrence against North Korea.

With the joint annual summer military exercise, the two countries want to strengthen their defenses. Among other things, because North Korea had already carried out several missile tests this year.

North Korea fired two cruise missile bodies last week after South Korea and the United States began preparatory training.

Biggest move in years

In recent years, military maneuvers have been scaled back due to the coronavirus pandemic and Yoon’s predecessor’s efforts to resume talks with the government in Pyongyang. North Korea sees the military exercises as a test run by the South for an invasion.

The maneuver is said to be the largest in years.
