Northeast Africa – Clashes between army and paramilitary group in Sudan – News

  • In Sudan, there have been clashes between the military in power there and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
  • The RSF said it had taken control of the presidential palace, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s residence and the international airport in the capital, Khartoum.
  • The Sudanese army contradicts these statements. The information cannot be verified independently at this time.

Earlier, the group said the army surrounded one of the RSF bases and opened fire with heavy weapons. A Reuters journalist reported that gun trucks and armored vehicles were deployed in Khartoum.

According to witnesses, shots were heard both in the capital and in neighboring towns.

Military took power after coup

In the country in Northeast Africa, which was hit by a serious economic crisis, mass protests in 2019 led to the fall of decades-long ruler Omar al-Bashir. The regular army and the RSF were jointly involved in this.

At that time, the military and civilian groups agreed on an interim government. However, in October 2021 there was a coup in which the military led by General Burhan took full power.

Since then, protests have repeatedly called for the military to withdraw from politics. RSF boss Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, recently led a movement that says he wants to lead the country to democracy.
