Norway wants to help poor countries

The Norwegian government has announced plans to establish a fund within the United Nations to help developing countries cope with the coronavirus pandemic.

Feared by all, if the coronavirus arrives in poor countries a real human slaughter could befallen. Indeed, living conditions and health structures will not be able to withstand such a health crisis. Norway has thus announced its intention to set up a fund within the United Nations to help poor countries cope with the coronavirus pandemic.

"We are concerned about how the virus will affect developing countries with already fragile health systems ", said Norwegian Development Aid Minister Dag-Inge Ulstein.

Thanks to different donors, the fund should be launched quickly, "maybe already this week", said Norway, without specifying the amount foreseen for its own participation.

"International solidarity across borders is more important than ever. This is why it is important for us to contribute economically to such a UN fund.", he added in a statement.

The move, Oslo said, was welcomed by UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned Thursday that "millions"Lives would be at stake if solidarity was not exercised in the world, especially with the poorest countries, in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.
More than 324,000 cases of infection have been detected in 171 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic, which killed at least 14,396 people, according to a statement made on Sunday.
