The Mysterious Cities of Gold series is inspired by a novel by Scott O’Dell, The King’s Fifthpublished across the Atlantic in 1966 and published in France in 1993 under the title The Gold Road. The adventures of Esteban are also inspired by another work by Scott O’Dell, the trilogy of Seven Serpentsmade of The Captive (1979), The Feathered Serpent (1981) and The Amethyst Ring (1983).
