Not all companies are in the same boat to protect employees from professional risks

“We must better prevent workplace accidents and we must improve the quality of life at work and the working conditions of French people, particularly those who have the most difficult jobs”declared, Wednesday March 27, the Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, on “8 p.m.” on TF1.

Indeed, on prevention and health at work within companies, the account is not there: less than half of them (46%) had a single professional risk assessment document (Duerp) to updated in 2019. This document is nevertheless cited by prevention organizations as the basis of any policy to combat dangers at work.

If every employer is required to protect the health and safety of its employees, and to list the risks to which they are exposed, prevention is therefore far from being the same everywhere: this is what describes a study of the direction of animation of research, studies and statistics of the Ministry of Labor (Dares) published on March 21.

Small businesses less well covered

Small structures identify these risks less: in the private sector in 2019, 41% of establishments with one to ten employees had an up-to-date Duerp compared to 91% of those with more than 250 employees. This documentation is also observed more in the activities most exposed to risks.

As for prevention actions (new personal protective equipment, safety training, individual assistance for employees in difficulty, etc.), they are carried out more by employers who complete their Duerp and declare risks: thus, in 2019, 81% establishments which declared at least three risks for their employees carried out prevention actions during the twelve months preceding the study compared to 44% of those which declared no physical risk.

Only half of establishments with fewer than 10 employees in the private sector took measures against physical risks in 2019, and a quarter for psychosocial risks, while large companies exceed 90% on these two levels.

Occupational health less taken into account

Another lesson from this work is that prevention is also reinforced when the company has staff representative bodies (IRP) – works or establishment committee, social and economic committee, staff delegates, union delegates or union section representatives. – active. A company that has one or more IRPs is, for example, twice as likely to seek professional risk prevention advice from specialized organizations.
