Nothing to declare: was Dany Boon inspired by his personal life to write this film?

Released in cinemas in 2011, the film Nothing to reportworn by Dany Boon and Benoit Poelvoorde, will be rebroadcast on Sunday May 22, 2022, from 9:05 p.m. on TF1. Directed by Dany Boonthis comedy is the first film that the comedian has directed after the incredible success at the box office of Welcome to the Ch’tis, which had gathered more than 20 million spectators in dark rooms in 2008. As a reminder, this cult comedy remains to this day the 2nd film with the highest number of admissions in France,just behind the titanic by James Cameron. After such success, Dany Boon inevitably had a lot of pressure on his shoulders when he started working on Nothing to report.

“Many directors and producers had (…) explained to me how hard it was to get back to writing after success. (…) Concretely, from the moment I had my subject, everything went well. In any case, I was comfortable with my story. But I had despite everything, always in a corner of my head, the idea that I was going to be eagerly awaited. And I especially put pressure on myself by telling myself that I must not disappoint“, had explained Dany Boon during the promotion of the film. To carry out this comedy, the comedian drew his inspiration from the story of his parents.

“My father was Kabyle and my mother French. She fell pregnant very quickly, she was rejected by part of her family. These are things you don’t forget when you live them like me as a child…“, he underlined. In addition, the filmmaker was also inspired by his personal experience to write this feature film centered on the Franco-Belgian border. “I have crossed this famous border between the two countries many times. (…) At the time, I had long hair and with my portfolio of drawings and my Cure badges, I was stopped and searched by customs officers every time. And there, when I went back through this customs that I knew so well, I came across a true no man’s land (…). You would have thought you were in a western street. I immediately thought that there was an eminently cinematographic subject“, added Dany Boon.
