Messaging Skiff, also known for its collaborative work tools, has just been acquired by Notion. The service will be active for another six months before being shut down for good.
Skiff messaging was created in 2020, and in just a few months had acquired a little notoriety thanks to its quality of service and its functionalities. We also praised the quality of the online solution in our full review of Skiff Mail a few weeks ago. The world of start-ups is still as vibrant as ever and today we learn of a major change for Skiff, which has just announced on its website its takeover by one of its competitors. Information that should not delight users of the productivity solution.
A surprise buyout carried out by Notion to complete its offer
It is through a simple message published on the home page of its product that Skiff announces its acquisition by Notion. If you don’t know the latter, we can describe Notion as a competitor to Google Workspace, with several online tools for working alone or collaboratively. Notion offers a project manager, a document creator or even a calendar. Everything is assisted by artificial intelligence to save time and improve productivity.
Notion is today an important player in the online services sector and its services are used by many prestigious clients such as Capgemini or Lydia, but the software suite was missing messaging, which it has just acquired by purchasing Skiff for an amount not communicated by both parties.
Data Privacy Week recently ended. This is the ideal opportunity to look into the issue of secure mailboxes. We now present to you our selection of secure email applications.

Skiff users have six months to find an alternative
Skiff’s tools should logically be integrated into Notion in the coming months. Even more serious for users: secure messaging will no longer be accessible in a few weeks. The Skiff teams indicate in their message that the service will be taken offline in exactly six months. If you use messaging, but don’t want to join Notion, you now have until summer to pack your boxes and migrate your mailbox and contacts. Data will not be automatically migrated to Notion for privacy and security reasons.
As we learned during our interview with Andrew Milich, CEO and co-founder of the service, Skiff had nearly two million free and paying users in January 2024.
Among the alternatives available to Skiff, the best known certainly remains Proton Mail, a company established in Switzerland for a decade and which has not failed to publish a migration tutorial for Skiff users.

9.1
- Robust and secure infrastructure
- Extreme simplification of encryption
- Located in Switzerland
Proton Mail is a serious alternative to Gmail. It redefines encryption by making it accessible to everyone. Of course, you will probably have to adopt the paid plan to get the most out of it, but it is an excellent first choice for anyone who wants to start freeing themselves from GAFAM services while being assured that communications remain private.
