Now it’s court’s turn – Phantom of the Sugar Hut: Police reveal secret

The Tyrolean police now know who caused the fateful alpine accident at the Zuckerhütl on April 6th. A victim suffers permanent damage. The Innsbruck public prosecutor’s office is examining whether criminal behavior occurred.

That Saturday, an unknown mountaineer accidentally pushed an alpinist in a gully beneath the summit. As a result, five mountaineers fell and a South Tyrolean woman and her partner were injured. The 27-year-old will probably suffer permanent damage. The person responsible went into hiding and the investigators were looking for the “phantom” from the Zuckerhütl. At first it wasn’t even clear whether the “Phantom” was male or female. A call for witnesses in the “Krone” has now led to the man who triggered the chain reaction. Witness directly above the scene of the accident “Soon after the call, the Tyrolean mountaineering couple from whom we were hoping to get information came forward,” says Stephan Gröber, Alpine police officer, happily Neustift. The investigators hit a direct hit. “The male witness was directly above the scene of the accident at the time of the accident and saw what was going on in detail,” says Alpine police officer Gröber. Twelve people who were involved in the accident or who were able to provide information were finally interviewed – including the person who caused it. The police do not provide any information about his origin. “The man didn’t take care of the injured because there happened to be Stubai mountain rescuers on site who provided first aid,” says Stephan Gröber. Now the public prosecutor’s office is on the move. The police are now sending the report on the accident to the public prosecutor’s office. “As in a traffic accident, negligent bodily harm could be possible,” informs Gröber. It could also be about “abandoning the injured”. The public prosecutor examines whether criminal behavior actually occurred.
