NSA, KFC: these jokes hidden in the subscriptions of Twitter accounts

On Twitter, some accounts use their subscriptions to send hidden messages. Here are a few examples that made us laugh, like KFC France which only tracks police and gendarme accounts (chickens, you got it?).

On Twitter, some CMs (community managers) make hidden jokes. Without anyone realizing it, they use the subscriptions to their accounts to make the clever little ones laugh who come across the information, often by chance. It was while writing an article on whistleblower Edward Snowden that we realized this, which made us want to write about the phenomenon.

Of course, we’re likely to miss a lot of jokes, perhaps better than the ones you’ll find below. If you have other examples in mind, do not hesitate to mention us on social networks. We will relay them with great pleasure! In the meantime, here is a small selection of jokes that made us laugh.

Edward Snowden monitors the NSA

A former NSA employee, Edward Snowden made a name for himself by revealing the existence of several mass surveillance programs. A refugee in Russia since then, he regularly uses his Twitter account to denounce politicians and companies that he believes do not respect privacy enough (or, like everyone else, to give his opinion on anything and everything). Followed by 5.1 million people, Edward Snowden follows only one account: that of the NSA. A little joke that could be interpreted as a role reversal. It is he who keeps an eye on his former employer now who, strangely, did not block him.

KFC France and chickens

KFC’s French account is, by far, the one that made us laugh the most. If it is rather the rival Burger King who is used to jokes on social networks, the fast food specializing in chicken had the incredible idea of subscribing to 109 accounts all linked to the police or the gendarmerie. In addition to the Ministry of the Interior, the Orne gendarmerie or the Le Havre police station, he follows dozens of police officers who claim him in their biographies. The joke is quite simple to understand: police and gendarmes are “chickens”.

The recipe for KFC in the United States

However, it is likely that the idea for KFC France’s CM came from its American counterpart. Indeed, KFC’s US account is subscribed to 11 people. He notably follows “Herb” (Herb Alpert, Herb Sendek, Herb Scribner…) but also Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Geri Horner, Mel C and Melanie Brown, the former “Spice” Girls. You have it ? 11 herbs and spices, as in the Tenders recipe.

Deadpool and his strange passion

The most irreverent (not to say the most WTF) Marvel superhero, Deadpool has an amazing passion for Hello Kitty. In the films, he walks in particular with a backpack bearing his image. In real life too, Deadpool loves the little ribbon cat. On Twitter, he only follows her.

God has a sense of humor

TheTweetOfGod claims to spread the word of God on Twitter. This parody account, with 6 million subscribers, also has fun with its subscriptions. God only follows one person: Justin Bieber. Sarcastic?

Still in the divine section, the French version of this parody account, entitled _DieuOff, is more provocative. It follows 666 people. ?

PlayStation: all I want for Christmas

On PlayStation controllers, there are four buttons: cross, circle, triangle and square. To make its subscribers laugh, the PlayStationFR account had the excellent idea of subscribing to four accounts (one seems to have closed today). There is notably @RonD or @TriangleRewards… but also @MariahCarey. Yes, this joke is great. All I want for Christmas is a PS5!

Twitter also has fun on Twitter

Finally, in recent years, the official Twitter account has become a benchmark for nonsense. Accustomed to writing anything, the CMs of the @Twitter account very often have fun transforming their profile, for example by following only one random person. At the time of writing this article, it’s not clear why, but they follow 5 accounts. These are bots programmed to merge emojis or to imitate Van Gogh. From the official account of the social network, one would have expected something more serious.
