This performance was probably a big surprise for the audience: *NSYNC were on stage together again at the MTV Video Music Awards. The former boy band was at the event, which was broadcast live from the Prudential Center in New Jersey, to hand out one of the awards.

Host Nicki Minaj, 40, announced the band, consisting of Chris Kirkpatrick, 51, JC Chasez, 47, Justin Timberlake, 42, Lance Bass, 44, and Joey Fatone, 46, during the show. She called their reunion an “iconic moment.” When the musicians entered the stage, the audience and celebrities like Taylor Swift, 33, were completely amazed, “The Hollywood Reporter” reported, among others.

*NSYNC honor Taylor Swift

“Over 20 years ago we were just kids when we won the Best Pop Video award for ‘Bye Bye Bye’,” the *NSYNC stars said, according to US media reports. “It was our first VMAs and it meant a lot to us. This award was a validation of our hard work.” The band continued: “A lot has changed in the past two decades, but one thing remains the same: a creative, cross-border video leaves lasting traces for decades.”

*NSYNC then announced the first prize of the evening in the “Best Pop” category, which went to Taylor Swift for “Anti-Hero”. When the artist joined them on stage, she was apparently still amazed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she is having a hard time switching from the *NSYNC reunion to her prize. “You are pop personified,” enthused Swift, who also apparently had *NSYNC dolls at home.

Successes in the 90s

*NSYNC enjoyed great success in the late 90s and early 2000s with hits like “Bye Bye Bye” and “It’s Gonna Be Me”. The boy band had six top 10 hits on the Billboard charts. The band, which broke up in 2002, celebrated a reunion in 2018: for a game of “Never Have I Ever” on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show”.
