In the mobile market, it is not uncommon to see options for the same model spring up a few months after its release, especially from Chinese manufacturers. This is also the case with smartphones designed for the gamingas shown by the new Red Magic 8S Pro and 8S Pro+.

Evolution of the Red Magic 8 Pro released in China at the end of 2022, this new model aims to be one of the most powerful of 2023. While its predecessor was one of the first to be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, it opts for the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2.

This boosted version makes it possible to increase the rate of the main CPU core from 3.2 to 3.36 GHz, and that of the GPU from 680 to 719 MHz. The brand thus announces a performance gain of around 5%. A result similar to recent chips stamped For Galaxyfound on the Galaxy S23 range, but with a more neutral name (Leading Version).

The set is obviously compatible with 5G, Bluetooth 5.3, but also wifi 7. We also note the presence of a 3.5 mm jack port and stereo speakers.

A power… Useless?

The 4 nm chip can be accompanied by 8 to 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and up to 512 GB of UFS 4.0 storage. The 8S Pro+ version goes further by integrating up to 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. A quantity that seems almost ridiculous, since it will be impossible to see the difference with a slightly less well-endowed model. Indeed, the software used (games or apps) must be able to manage such a mass of RAM, and this is not the case. It is therefore a marketing strategy based on a race for records, which is often the case in this environment.

To maintain an adequate temperature, Nubia uses the new version of its ICE 12 cooling system. It is made up of a 10-layer heat dissipation system and benefits from a finned fan capable of reaching 20,000 rotations per minute. The brand explains that this helps maintain a temperature of around 41°C in-game.

The rest of the technical sheet is similar to the model released at the end of 2022. Its dimensions of 164 x 76.4 x 8.9 mm and its weight of 228 g make it a particularly imposing terminal. Without being really discreet (there is still a touch of RGB), the monolithic design is quite sober in this segment.

We find the same 6.8-inch AMOLED screen as before. It displays Full HD + (2480 x 1116 pixels) at 120 Hz and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. In the photo, it retains a 50 Mpx (f / 1.9) Samsung GN5 main sensor, associated with a module ultra wide-angle (8 Mpx, f / 2.2) and a macro module of 2 Mpx (f / 2.4). It will therefore undoubtedly be able to produce very correct shots during the day, even if it is clearly not sold as a photophone.

The Red Magic 8S Pro still opts for a 6000 mAh battery compatible with recharging at 80 W. The 8S Pro+ version is equipped with an accumulator of “only” 5000 mAh supporting recharging at 165 W. 14 min, according to Nubia. Once again, the brand shows the muscles, but we regret that the battery is reduced, especially for what is above all a portable console.

While the Nubia Red Magic 8S Pro+ will likely be China-only, the 8S Pro is expected to land here (likely via Amazon) from July 18, 2023.

The brand has announced prices starting at 4,399 yuan (around €560 excl. VAT) for the 8 + 256 GB version, and up to 5,699 yuan (around € 720 excl. VAT) for the 12 + 512 GB version. revised upwards by crossing our borders.
