NUPES: what do the letters of this new political force mean?

The acronym “NUPES” corresponds to the New Popular Economic and Social Union. Created on the initiative of La France Insoumise, this coalition now brings together the party of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, EELV, and the PCF, on the occasion of the legislative elections.

Among the demands of the NUPES movement are the increase of the minimum wage to 1,400 euros net, retirement at 60, as well as the freezing of prices on basic necessities.

The Pcf, newcomer to NUPES

This union of the left is the result of a negotiation between La France Insoumise and Europe Ecologie Les Verts. It was on Sunday May 1 that the two parties agreed on the official name of this reunification. This union is not synonymous with a merger of the two parties, which retain their independence.

The French Communist Party was the last to join the popular union launched on the initiative of Jean-Luc Mélenchon: “On May 3, 1936, the Popular Front won the legislative elections. On May 3, 2022, we gather in a New Popular Ecological and Social Union. Together, let’s write history by winning these legislative elections,” tweeted Fabien Roussel, the party’s national secretary.

TEN PARTIES INTEGRATED IN THE MOVEMENT

If the Insoumis had initially planned to keep the term “Popular Union” because of its popularization during the presidential election, EELV demanded the appearance of an initial for the word “ecological”, to the chagrin of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who feared that each political group taking part in this union would require the addition of a new term.

This is how the New Popular Economic and Social Union was born, which now brings together ten parties, including Génération.s and the Left Party, with the aim of presenting common candidacies for the next legislative elections.
