A news portable console driven by the NVIDIA/Mediatek duo? This could seriously boost the market!

Boosted by the release – and success – of Valve’s Steam Deck, the hybrid portable PC console market is more than just envious and many manufacturers have embarked on the adventure.

Most of them trusted AMD APUs, these chips which combine good CPU power and very interesting performance of a modern integrated graphics solution.

Omnipresence of AMD chips

So, whether it is Valve, but also ASUS, Lenovo or most Chinese companies in the sector (AYANEO, AOKZOE, GPD…) all or almost all have opted for Ryzen 6000, 7000 or 8000 .

Only MSI attempted to take a step aside by relying on an Intel solution while the American firm had just launched its Meteor Lake generation with the promise of a graphics solution (iGPU), again, efficient. For the moment, this bet is far from being a success, because the Intel iGPU still suffers from various optimization problems which affect the performance of the MSI Claw.

However, it is rumored that another player – and not the least important – in the graphics world would be tempted by a foray into the world of portable consoles. An actor who of course bears the name NVIDIA.

NVIDIA/Mediatek association?

It must be said that between the Shield and especially the Switch, NVIDIA is not at all foreign to the world of consoles. Better still, Nintendo’s latest machine served as a model for certain engineers for the design of the hybrid consoles that we have been discovering in recent months.

So of course this is a rumor and neither NVIDIA nor Mediatek have confirmed anything. Relayed by our colleagues from VideoCardzthe rumor indicates a relative annoyance of NVIDIA in relation to its relations with Nintendo, but, more importantly, we know that Mediatek is eyeing the design of an SoC capable of powering this type of portable machines.

The association of the two companies would therefore make sense and this collaboration would involve a third rather “muscular” thief, the Taiwanese TSMC whose 3 nm manufacturing node would be used to design said chip which would be in ARM architecture.

You will have noticed that this is a lot of “ifs”, but admit that seeing such an association could seriously boost the portable console market and, who knows, give AMD/Valve a cold sweat?

Having fallen into video games at a time when it took a great imagination to see here a football match, there a tank fight in these few bars represented on the screen, I have followed all the developments for forty years. Loyal to the PC, but a fan of all genres, I only have trouble with JRPGs. Otherwise, from the driest turn-based strategy to the most spectacular FPS, including sports simulations or musical games, I can do it all... with a preference for management and games combining several styles. My video game pantheon would consist of three series: Elite, Civilization and Max Payne.
