After announcing a future partnership in the development of a SoC specially dedicated to the automobile, MediaTek and Nvidia would continue their tandem in another sector of the market – and not the least. According to insiders on the Chinese social network Weibo, the two IT giants are collaborating on a processor intended for “AI” laptop PCs, a marked difference from previous rumors which concerned a chipset for mobiles.
A collaboration that would complete MediaTek’s other major project, the Dimensity 9400 mobile chip engraved in 3 nm, announced with great fanfare last night. The new processor developed with Nvidia would use the same engraving quality and would exploit both the Arm-Cortex cores and the GPU cores developed, logically, by the team green. Unsurprisingly, a significant portion would be devoted to NPUs (neural processing unit) eighth generation to boost tasks taking advantage of artificial intelligence; an area already well established by Nvidia, a very important player in this hardware market. An announcement during the next CES in Las Vegas, at the beginning of January 2025, would be possible.
Several computer manufacturers are already in the list of customers for this new chip, including Asus, Lenovo and HP – with the hegemony of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips on Windows machines in Arm in the sights. Depending on its concrete graphics capabilities, it would also be possible to see it available in a dedicated version for portable consoles – which would corroborate previous rumors raised a few weeks ago already.
