This graphics card canceled by NVIDIA at the last minute could make its “return” for CES 2023 in Las Vegas.

The GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB is a bit of a bad joke for an NVIDIA which had obviously not surveyed the market enough before launching. But things should “get back to normal”.

Canceled four weeks after its announcement

Remember, on September 20, Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, announced the upcoming arrival of the first generation Ada Lovelace cards. Three products were even already announced by a visibly very confident boss.

Scheduled for release on October 12, the GeForce RTX 4090 was delivered on time, even if the stock shortages arrived very quickly despite a price that placed the card above 2,000 euros. Like what, the aficionados of the mark are not in misery.

Alongside this powerhouse, NVIDIA was considering two versions of the RTX 4080. The first, with 16 GB of video memory, should also integrate a significantly more powerful GPU than the second, equipped with “only” 12 GB of GDDR6X.

It’s not so much the differences in the amount of memory as the GPU’s potential that have drawn criticism. Quickly, it seemed clear that this RTX 4080 12 GB did not have the build to bear a name so close to that of its big sister.

Revival in 4070 Ti

A dramatic change two days after the release of the GeForce RTX 4090. If the 4080 16 GB is confirmed by NVIDIA, the company decides to draw a line under the 4080 12 GB, recognizing a name called ” confusing “. We have the meaning of the formula, in Santa Clara.

NVIDIA’s partners have apparently been warned at the last minute, but the American company could not decently cancel such a long-awaited product completely and so late. The end of the story, however, is not yet set in stone.

Indeed, relayed by VideoCardz, the words of the Internet user Kopite7kimi are not official, even if the guy has already distinguished himself on many occasions for the reliability of his information in “preview”. On Twitter, he explains that the RTX 4080 12 GB has simply been renamed to RTX 4070 Ti.

We therefore expect this 4070 Ti to display a technical sheet very close to that of the 4080 12 GB: 7,680 CUDA cores, 12 GB of GDDR6X memory at 21 Gbps and a performance delay of between 24 and 30% compared to compared to the 4080 16 GB.

Finally, last element which also remains to be confirmed: NVIDIA is preparing for an announcement or a launch of the RTX 4070 Ti at the very beginning of next year, perhaps as early as January at the same time as CES 2023 in Las Vegas.
