NVIDIA Omniverse: generative AI for the development of tomorrow’s games?

NVIDIA took advantage of GDC 2023 to talk about its Omniverse platform, which intends to lay the foundations forContent-generating AI in games.

The objective of this new technology is to help developers improve their creations and the assets of their games, in particular on the production of characters that are quite staggeringly realistic.

NVID-IA gives a layer

NVIDIA’s love for artificial intelligence is no longer to be proven, and now the company is splitting a generative AI interested in the development of video games. A trend in this direction is starting to register, as Unity today also announced its own AI in the field.

In the case of NVIDIA, this goes through its Omniverse platform, which now hosts cloud services like ACE (Avatar Cloud Engine). This tool helps create photorealistic and expressive character models using NVIDIA Riva and Omniverse Audio2Face. A video presentation being more eloquent than words, here is a demonstration of the result:


The character thus presented is entirely generated by the AI ​​​​and is screamingly realistic, even in the lip synchronization, which switches from English to Mandarin in real time. Not to spoil anything, the video is also magnified by the famous ray tracing so dear to NVIDIA. The result, of course, falls short of Epic’s impressive MetaHuman, but shows no less promise, knowing that it is the work of an AI.

Technology that will help develop the games of tomorrow

As in many fields, generative AI thus intends to make it possible to create high-quality 2D and 3D elements in record time that can be used for game development, while limiting the costs normally incurred by such productions. In any case, that’s how NVIDIA sells the thing.

According to the blog post dedicated to the announcement, quoted in source below, Omniverse Audio2Face is already used by some developers. GSC Game World, the Ukrainian studio behind STALKER 2will notably take advantage of this technology for its highly anticipated game, if all goes well this year.

NVIDIA also announced that Omniverse will be used, through the Universal Scene Description (USD) framework, to unify the development of 3D assets. USD has, in fact, been adopted by Tencent Games (in particular for the rendering of hair and hair), Unity or the Unreal Engine 5. Omniverse therefore seems to live up to its name and risks becoming in many respects a pillar in the development of video games, with the help of artificial intelligence.
