THE graphics cards GeForce GTX are experiencing their last weeks: NVIDIA will stop production of their graphics chips.

The best things have an ending » says the proverb and this maxim seems perfectly suited to the situation as NVIDIA has announced the end of production of its GeForce GTX processors.

For Jensen Huang’s company, it is of course a question of switching to an entire catalog dedicated to RTX cards, but for many players this will inevitably cause a little pang in the heart.

More than fifteen years of history

For several years, the suffix “GTX” was attached to various series of cards by NVIDIA to distinguish them from “GS” and “GT”, notably on the GeForce 7800.

Subsequently, from the GeForce 200 series range, NVIDIA decided to systematically attach this “GTX” which then becomes a prefix and which can be found for example on the GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280, from June 2008. Since then, generation after generation, we only talk about GeForce GTX or even simply GTX to designate NVIDIA cards.

In 2018, however, NVIDIA seeks to illustrate the ever-increasing use of ray tracing and decides to change the prefix, the GeForce GTX become GeForce RTX with the release of the GeForce RTX 2080, on September 20, 2018. From then on, the GTX are confined to “second-rate” models designed for the entry-level from NVIDIA.

Ray tracing on all floors

Little by little, the GeForce GTX became rarer and, soon, this segment of the NVIDIA catalog was limited to the GeForce GTX 16 series family with cards like the GTX 1650 or GTX 1660.

But, as we said in the preamble, the best things come to an end and it will soon no longer be possible to afford GTX whatever the desired model. To believe Wccftech, NVIDIA has simply decided to end production of these GPUs and informed its main partners. Everything suggests that this complete interruption of production will take place during the first quarter of next year.

Between GPU stocks and card stocks, we can imagine that the GTX 16 series will still be available a few weeks after the effective end of GPU production, but no doubt that at the start of the school year in September 2024, this will be the case. finished with these cards. So make way for “all RTX” at NVIDIA.
