In the fifth episode of “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen / James Earl Jones) attacks a rebel base. Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) uses his former student’s lust for victory and hatred to his advantage, allowing him and the rebels to escape.

Flashbacks to a training duel from Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones punctuate Obi-Wan and Vader’s strategic combat. There, Anakin always advances, trying with all his might to defeat his master. In the end, Obi-Wan is able to use Anakin’s desire to win against him.

The Lesson of the Training Session: “Your need to prove yourself is your weakness. And until you overcome it, you will remain a Padawan.” This shocking realization is also the lesson of the episode for Vader, because more than 10 years after the training duel, Obi-Wan was able to use this weakness for himself.

This powerful lesson also proves to be far more far-reaching, putting Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope in a new light. There Vader and Kenobi (this time Alec Guinness) meet again after another 9 years and Vader is sure: “When I left you, I was your student. Now I am the master.”

We know, of course, that Darth Vader wins the lightsaber fight, yet his desire to prove himself is used against him once again. Obi-Wan deliberately sacrifices himself so Luke (Mark Hamill) and Leia (Carrie Fisher) can escape. Kenobi knows that the two of them are far more important to bringing down the Empire than he is.

One could even go a step further at this point: Vader’s desire to defeat Kenobi is the reason for the fall of the Empire. If Vader hadn’t focused so much on Kenobi and let him engage him in a one-on-one fight, then maybe Luke and Leia could have been stopped, and with it the destruction of the first and second Death Stars.

Anakin’s short-sightedness and ambition can still be felt in Vader, even though the Sith Lord claims he destroyed Anakin Skywalker. Obi-Wan knows this and can still teach his student lessons 20 years after the fatal duel on Mustafar.

Anakin has never overcome his weakness, his need to prove himself, and is therefore always only a student and not a master.

In the sixth episode of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” on Disney+, Kenobi and Darth Vader rematch. The finale will be released on June 22, 2022 in the Disney+ New Releases program and will not be the only “Star Wars” release in 2022.
