Obi-Wan Kenobi: Early Launch on Disney+ – Is “Stranger Things” the Reason?

OBI WAN KENOBI

“Obi-Wan Kenobi” has started on Disney + – and three hours early. Netzwelt reveals why this could be a strategy to suppress “Stranger Things”.

  • You can now watch the first two episodes of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” on Disney+.
  • Surprisingly, the episodes ended up in the streaming service’s program three hours earlier than expected.
  • With this move, Disney is making Netflix and “Stranger Things” additional competition.

The Star Wars Celebration is currently taking place in California. In addition to new announcements and panels with filmmakers, attendees also saw performances by Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen, who presented the first two episodes of “Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

Afterwards, at around 6 a.m. German time, the episodes were also streamed on Disney+. The series started three hours earlier than expected, and new features normally only appear in the Disney+ program at 9 a.m. What is the reason for the early release?

On the one hand, Disney could ensure that not too many spoilers circulate on the Internet before the start. Star Wars Celebration fans may find it difficult to keep their first excited impressions to themselves, so the early release prevents fans from finding out important information via Reddit or Twitter before they can watch the first episodes.

However, another explanation might be the 4th season of “Stranger Things”. This also starts today, on May 27th, but on Netflix. With two top-class new releases, the question naturally arises as to where series fans will first press play. With Stranger Things still only coming out at 9 a.m., Obi-Wan Kenobi now has a timing advantage.

Of course, “Stranger Things” Season 4 will release 7 episodes in one fell swoop, so even if the Netflix hit gets all the attention first, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” should be the focus of attention with the third episode next Friday at the latest. Nevertheless, Disney probably didn’t miss the opportunity to annoy its competitor Netflix with an early release.

On June 8th, things will continue on Disney+ with the exciting new Marvel series “Ms. Marvel”. You can find additional highlights in our overview of what’s new from Disney+. There you will surely find films and series to keep you busy in the days without new “Obi-Wan Kenobi” episodes.
