Federal Councilor Alain Berset and his family opposed the construction of an antenna in the village of Belfaux (FR). One argument in the letter from the Minister of Health in particular makes you sit up and take notice.

A building permit for a mobile phone antenna in the municipality of Belfaux (FR) was revoked after residents, including Federal Councilor Alain Berset, objected.

In 2018, Alain Berset, who lives in Belfaux, and three members of his family, as citizens of the municipality, lodged an objection to the construction of a 4G antenna by the mobile phone provider Swisscom, as the daily newspapers “La Liberté” and “Blick” reported on Wednesday. This could later have been converted into a 5G antenna without further public approval.

Health minister uses controversial argument

The letter, signed by Berset, says, among other things: “Electromagnetic waves of technological origin, especially those emanating from mobile phone technology, have harmful effects on humans and animals.” It is astonishing that the Minister of Health in particular has expressed concerns about possible damage from radiation. After all, according to the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG), the maximum values applicable in Switzerland are unproblematic.

Simple success stuns anti-5G circles

The success of the procedure surprised opponents of the 5G antennas. “We have already filed objections with over 600 signatories, gone all the way to the federal court and were unsuccessful. But now I see with this antenna that an objection is enough and the project will be rejected, »explained the President of the Stop 5G Glâne association, Chantal Blanc, to the French-speaking Swiss television RTS.

Surprised by this procedure, the Freiburg 5G opponent contacted the authorities and obtained and published the complaint letter from the Berset family through the cantonal public information law. However, Blanc emphasizes that their action was in no way aimed at putting Alain Berset in the spotlight. However, the suspicion of unequal treatment arises.

Berset defends himself

After Berset’s press spokesman had first commented, the Minister of Health himself has now also reported on the case. Compliance with the legal radiation standards is of the utmost importance.

In the case in Befaux, however, the reason for his objection was not health concerns, but the preservation of monuments. Berset said this in an interview with “Le Temps”, which was published on Friday evening. In addition, he has no more weight than other citizens.
