BVB stops Essen’s return to professional football
The last matchday of the Regionalliga West is a thriller. After 45 minutes, Rot-Weiß Essen seems to be on its way back to professional football, but after 90 minutes the U23 of Borussia Dortmund are cheering. A video from the ranks of BVB causes trouble – and an appeal against the final table is underway.
Borussia Dortmund’s U23 made the championship in the West Regional Football League perfect, at least from a sporting point of view, but cannot yet celebrate promotion to the 3rd division and thus professional football. After the 2: 1 (0: 1) at Wuppertaler SV, the team of coach Enrico Maaßen ended the season as leaders. Traditional club Rot-Weiss Essen follows, three points behind, who won their last game of the season 2-0 (2-0) at FC Wegberg-Beeck. But because there are objections from title rivals RWE against ratings of BVB catch-up games, the reserve of the Bundesliga club from Dortmund must wait for the decision of the West German Football Association (WDFV) expected for the coming week.
After the game, there were further disagreements between the promotion rivals. Because, according to an Instagram video by a player, the Dortmund team played the RWE anthem while cheering, Essen’s sports director Jörn Nowak was angry. “It is always said that you should be a fair loser. In addition, Nowak was annoyed by a statement by Dortmund’s youngster Lars Ricken, according to which BVB rose without professionals.
