Ocean Viking: how does the Italian executive react after France’s statements?

The Ocean Viking docked Friday morning in Toulon but Gérald Darmanin is not taking off. The Minister of the Interior denounced the “unacceptable” behavior of Italy, which he accuses of not having respected European law. The reaction of France creates incomprehension in Italy and Rome therefore opposes a pragmatic response, figures in support.

Discord between Paris and Rome. Gérald Darmanin denounced Thursday the “unacceptable behavior” of Italy, which refused to answer calls from the ship of SOS Méditerranée. Paris accuses Rome of not having respected European law. Is this an easy accusation? What is certain is that Italy has already welcomed tens of thousands of migrants and it is doing its accounts.

Italy has taken in 90,000 shipwrecked refugees this year

The Italian authorities respond to France in two parts: the first gives a figure, that of 90,000, corresponding to the 90,000 people collected at sea by Italy this year, while France is suing in Rome for 230 migrants to welcome. As for the second part of the reply, it goes through a silence. No reaction to the French announcement to give up contributing to the agreement for the distribution of 3,500 migrants who arrived in Italy, between French and German territories.

A silence because according to the Italian government, this system of distribution, based on voluntary work, in any case, does not work. He recalls that 13 countries had pledged to take care of 8,000 people. But according to Rome, so far only 117 people in total have been distributed between the countries concerned, including 38 in France. Scathing assessment of the Italian Minister of the Interior 38 is 0.04% of the total number of migrants rescued at sea.
