OECD appoints Canadian-Portuguese Alvaro Santos Pereira as chief economist

Economist Alvaro Santos Pereira was appointed chief economist of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on Thursday, effective June 1, replacing the British Clare Lombardelli.

Alvaro is a leading economist who served in the Portuguese government as Minister of Economy and Employment, said an OECD press release released on Thursday.

He takes over the position from Clare Lombardelli who has held it since May 2023.

Alvaro Santos Pereira has already held the position of interim chief economist of the international organization, which brings together 38 developed countries, twice, the last time between July 2022 and May 2023.

He was previously appointed director of the economic policy studies branch of the Department of Economic Affairs in 2023.

The new chief economist, who joined the OECD in 2014, holds a doctorate in economics from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby (Canada). He was professor of economic development and economic policy at Simon Fraser University, and lecturer at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and the University of York, United Kingdom, before holding positions functions in the Portuguese government.
