Off to the terrace: the best ideas for feeling good

The terrace design should be well thought out, after all, the open-air room is in permanent use in summer. We’ll introduce you to the most beautiful styles as well as helpful tips and reveal which highlights round off the design.

3-point plan for the terrace design

The terrace design needs a certain preparation time and planning. Nothing goes wrong with this 3-point plan!

3 steps for terrace design:

  1. Identify needs
  2. Choose a style
  3. Create a plan

Step 1: identify needs

It is important for the design to find out what you want for your terrace. Would you like to receive a lot of guests, grill, celebrate or instead prefer a larger bed or just a lawn to lie on? Do you prefer everything to be as easy to care for or is gardening relaxation for you? Write it down so that you can better understand and grasp your thoughts.

Step 2: choose style

Country house style, urban or rather Asian – the terrace can be designed as you wish. It becomes particularly harmonious when the terrace visually matches the house and the rest of the interior. These are particularly popular styles for patio design:

Country house

The country house style relies on natural materials such as wood, rattan, stone and clay, with textiles the focus is on cotton and linen. Shabby chic refines this style and gives it a special touch. On the terrace there is chic wooden or intricate metal furniture, plant pots and watering cans made of zinc and freesia, lilac or cornflowers transform the garden into an idyllic country garden, while gravel, wood or granite refine the floor of the terrace.

Highlight: Decorative elements such as the beautifully patterned tea service as flower pots.

Tip: This is how you can make shabby chic yourself:

Scandinavian chic

Scandi Chic can currently be seen everywhere and is also ideal for the terrace. However, there is no place for unnecessary bells and whistles. Muted colors, straightforward shapes and natural materials such as wood and cotton play the main role here.

To add a touch of cosiness to the whole style, Scandi Chic uses textiles: Cushions, plaids and an outdoor rug should not be missing on the terrace.

Highlight: Cleverly placed light with fairy lights, lanterns and lanterns.

Asian style

Like the Scandinavian style, the Asian style also dispenses with pompous design. The look focuses on the essentials. The focus is on green plants instead of colorful flower beds, such as bonsais or bamboo. The Asian-style garden relies on calm wood and stone optics.

The Mediterranean-style terrace exudes serenity and pure summer feeling. Natural stone, bright flowers and light colors create this warm and friendly atmosphere. The natural stone in terracotta is the classic for a Mediterranean-style terrace, but irregularly shaped floor tiles also convey this flair. When it comes to garden furniture, it doesn’t depend on a specific material, but Mediterranean lovers would best avoid plastic furniture and opt for wicker, rattan or simple iron furniture. A privacy screen made of natural stone enhances the summery feeling and at the same time protects against prying eyes.

Step 3: create a plan

When you have decided on a style and know what your terrace with garden should be used for, the concrete planning can begin. Make a drawing with measurements and sizes so you can experiment as you want. Note the following aspects:

  1. Determine the size of the property.
  2. Draw in the desired areas.
  3. If you decide to redesign, choose the right floor covering (note the style and maintenance requirements) and calculate how much material you will need. Perhaps it makes sense to order “spare plates” at the same time.
  4. Research which furniture you like and which fits where (note size and usage radius!).

What belongs in every garden?

A terrace is usually separated from the rest of the garden by a floor covering. The floor can consist of tiles, slabs or planks, the material is a matter of taste as well as a question of use or needs. Popular floor coverings are:

  • WPC is easy to care for, but can also heat up quickly in the sun.
  • Wooden floorboards from z. B. Douglas fir are very robust and durable.
  • Clay stones are frost-resistant and waterproof.
  • Natural stones exude a natural atmosphere, but can also become very hot in summer.

If you still have a balcony at your house: The right flooring is also important for a balcony covering!

What should you watch out for with a large / small terrace?

Even a small garden with a terrace becomes an oasis of wellbeing! You should pay attention to these points when designing:

  • Again, plan the structure in advance.
  • Use Room divider, such as perennials or trellises, in order to optically separate areas from one another and thus subdivide them.
  • Choose slender shrubs and treesinstead of massive plants.
  • Your garden looks deeper when you different heights built in, e.g. B. with a raised terrace and raised beds.
  • A vertical garden saves space.
  • Set one with an eye catcher accent, this again creates a feeling of depth. That can also be chic garden furniture!

If you have a large garden, you have more space available, but thorough planning is particularly useful in this case. People tend to misjudge the size of furniture or when buying patio tiles and end up with too much or too little of it … Think about whether you want a flower bed and, if so, how complex it can be to maintain it. Or whether you prefer to use easy-care lawns instead and plan the terrace larger.

Decorate the terrace with accessories

The terrace can also be comfortably designed without a new floor or a new lounge corner. You can create great effects with light, such as fairy lights and large and small lanterns, but also solar plug-in lights around the terrace.

  • small fountain or drinking fountain for birds
  • Hanging lamps
