Oil companies rake in record profits

DECRYPTION – The controversies generated by these superprofits and their use are pushing governments to react.

The numbers are staggering. The British oil giant Shell announced on Thursday that it had generated $ 43.3 billion in net profit for the 2022 financial year. In one year, this profit has more than doubled. It is simply the most important result of the company. The day before, it was the American ExxonMobil which recorded 55.7 billion dollars in profit. And on January 27, the other American giant, Chevron, posted a profit of 36.5 billion dollars. The three companies have therefore generated a cumulative profit of nearly 136 billion dollars. And the British BP will publish its accounts on February 7. Before the French TotalEnergies closed the bench of Western majors the next day, February 8.

This performance was largely due to the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Oil has been very volatile in 2022, even if the price at the end of December was a little lower than at the start of the year…
