OkCupid: An honest dating app for everyone

OkCupid is a good alternative for all Tinder skeptics. The general tone is honest and nice, the users don’t just value superficial things and you don’t just have to rate others based on a photo. Unfortunately, the OkCupid Premium subscription model is quite expensive and necessary for some basic functions. Nevertheless, the overall impression is good.

We liked that

  • Easy setup of the profile with personal questions
  • Completely gender neutral language
  • Open and progressive app user base without much superficiality
  • Queer relationships are also possible
  • Many gender identities and relationship types to choose from

We didn’t like that

  • Subscription model quite expensive and necessary to filter no-go
  • Not as successful due to smaller user base in small towns

Tinder popularized online dating. With OkCupid, the owner of “Match Group” has another dating app. OkCupid is not a new app. Since its introduction in 2004, the number of users of the platform has been growing steadily – now also in Germany. The focus here is on an open dating culture that does not shy away from queer and alternative relationships and polygamy. In addition, getting to know each other is less superficial than on Tinder.

The app is available for Android and iPhone, but the service can also be accessed on a PC with a web app. There is no native PC or Mac app. We have tried OkCupid for you and reveal who is worth registering for.

Registration

Registering on OkCupid is pretty easy. You will be asked to add your name, email address and phone number. The app then asks you to enter your gender and the type of relationship you want. There are 22 different gender identities such as transmasculine, gender fluid or non-binary, as well as different forms of identity such as femme, active / passive or drag.

You have the option to add up to six photos in the app and can reveal all sorts of information about yourself. This also includes intimate topics such as religion, political views, level of education or smoking and eating habits. Important here is the fact that you are never obliged to provide this information. On the platform, however, it is welcome.

You can also give a short description of your profile. After that, you will be asked 15 personalized questions about your preferences, behaviors and hobbies, thanks to which you should be able to get better matches.

Registration via Facebook, where your name and date of birth can be used, is also possible.

This is how getting to know each other works on OkCupid

Overall, the learning process on OkCupid is pretty easy. The swipe-and-match mechanism, which many daters are already familiar with from Tinder, has only been expanded to include a few additional functions. In the main “Discover” grid you will see the classic profile tiles, which are also provided with a compatibility score as a percentage.

OkCupid: This is how the Tinder alternative works
Dating based on similarities

The Tinder alternative OkCupid uses sophisticated personality profiles to match potential partners. We show how OkCupid works.

The tiles can be swiped to the right or left and given a Super Like. At the top you’ll find a bar that’s similar to Instagram’s story interface. There you can see profiles filtered by certain preferences such as Popularity, New on OkCupid, High Compatibility, as well as profiles from around the world.

Compatibility score with insights

If you click on the displayed profile value for a profile, you will be shown information about why this profile suits you or not. There you can see at which points the other profile matches yours. There you also have the opportunity to change your answers to the questions.

To write to a person, after liking the profile, you can either comment on a photo of this person or write a message directly. You don’t have the option to filter strictly by properties such as age, distance or height. However, you can describe your ideal partner in the preferences, to which the matches will then be strongly adapted.

These paid features are available

The basic use of OkCupid is basically possible, and there will certainly be users who will be satisfied with the functions offered free of charge. If you are willing to pay, OkCupid has various payment models on offer

Profile Boosts

A paid option from OkCupid is their profile boosts. This allows you to boost your profile for a certain period of time in order to get up to five times more matches, according to the provider. A boost lasts 30 minutes and costs between €8 (if you buy one boost) and €6 (if you buy ten boosts), depending on how many you buy at once.

In addition to this, there are super boosts that last for a longer period of time. You pay 35 euros for a three-hour Superboost, OkCupid charges 53 euros for 6 hours and 70 euros for a 12-hour Superboost. We think that’s a very high price to pay for a temporary benefit.

Ok Cupid Premium

OkCupid Premium costs 53 euros (for one month) and 27 euros (for six months) per month and offers you the following advantages:

  • See who liked you
  • Three free Superlikes per week
  • Send unlimited likes
  • Unlimited activity reports
  • Filter no-gos
  • Unlock all intros
  • Unlimited rewinds
  • Freedom of Ads
  • Answers to all questions, even unanswered ones

These are basically good advantages that are offered here. With the Superlikes you can, for example, show a person that you really like them. With a Superlike, the chances of matching are significantly increased and you can send a message to the person before they have liked you back. You also have access to a list of profiles that have given you a superlike.

However, in our opinion, some functions, such as filtering no-gos, should also be possible without an expensive premium subscription. Read receipts can be purchased for an additional 3 euros (if you buy for five matches) to 99 cents (if you buy for 25 matches).

Seriousness and fake profiles

In general, we got a good impression of OkCupid in our test. The platform hosts many users who are quite interested in a real relationship. But it is also open to those who are looking for something unique and do not want to make any commitments.

What we found particularly impressive was the platform’s progressive attitude, especially when it comes to queer relationships. We encountered a comparatively small number of fake profiles, but they weren’t entirely absent.
