ByteDance, the creator of TikTokhad to use OpenAI in secret to develop his own artificial intelligence model.
It’s hard to do better than ChatGPT in the artificial intelligence sector. A pre-eminence recognized by many, and which makes OpenAI tools extremely coveted objects. Except that they are not available to everyone, and the American firm’s competitors cannot therefore use them to improve their own models. ByteDance was reminded of this this week!
TikTok improperly uses OpenAI technology
Today, the reference language model in AI is GPT-4. And if some like Google manage to produce interesting competitors, others like ByteDance wanted to go as simple as possible. Indeed, according to a survey of The Vergethe company behind TikTok is said to have secretly used OpenAI technology to develop its own language model.
The Verge has gained access to internal ByteDance documents showing that the company uses its access to the Microsoft Azure platform to leverage GPT tools. The ByteDance project, called “Project Seed”, would have used OpenAI technology at all stages of development of the language model.
ByteDance account suspended
A discovery which led to a prompt reaction. The Verge said today that it had been contacted by Microsoft spokesperson Niko Felix to explain that the ByteDance account had been suspended, following the article published by the American media.
“ Although ByteDance’s use of our API has been minimal, we have suspended the account while we continue our investigation. If we discover that their use does not comply with these policies, we will ask them to make the necessary changes or we will terminate their account » was explained.
During 2023, TikTok announced the development of several projects, supposed to ride the AI trend. The public was thus able to learn in quick succession the existence of a chatbot named Tako, then Grace. Will the problems with Microsoft be a hindrance to the company’s artificial intelligence projects?
