OL GROUPE: Fabio Grosso, new coach of Olympique Lyonnais – 09/16/2023 at 1:00 p.m.

Lyon, September 16, 2023

Olympique Lyonnais is very pleased to announce the appointment of Fabio Grosso as head coach of the professional team from Monday September 18, 2023. The former Italian international defender, World Champion in 2006, joined contracted until June 30, 2024, with the possibility of extending his contract for an additional season.

Fabio Grosso, the first Italian international to wear the OL jersey between 2007 and 2009, adds a new page to his personal history with the club by becoming the very first Italian coach of Olympique Lyonnais. During his two seasons at OL, Fabio Grosso played 78 matches in all competitions and won the Cup-Championship double in 2008, alongside Remy Vercoutre. A track record that the former Palermo and Inter Milan defender greatly enriched with the Azzurra squad by lifting the World Cup in 2006 after converting his shot on goal against the French team.

Transferred to Juventus Turin in 2009, Fabio Grosso ended his career 3 years later to embark on a new adventure as a coach by quickly taking charge of the Juve U19 team, with which he notably contests the Youth League against OL.

His journey then led him to be appointed as head of SSC Bari in the summer of 2017, marking the start of his career as head coach.

After successively playing at Hellas Verone, Brescia and FC Sion, it was at Frosinone, in Serie B, that the native of Rome truly shone. His arrival in March 2021 leads the club to the 1st division after an exceptional run last season: 80 points collected, 24 victories out of 38 matches, best attack in the championship (63 goals) and best defense (26 goals) .

Olympique Lyonnais is very pleased to welcome back Fabio Grosso, with whom the club has always maintained excellent relations since his departure in 2009 and has great confidence in his abilities to re-mobilize the professional team. While waiting to define the constitution of his staff and then officially take up his duties as coach, Fabio Grosso will attend the match against Le Havre this Sunday evening at Groupama Stadium, before being presented to the media on Monday September 18.

Finally, the OL management would like to particularly thank Jean-François Vulliez, Jérémie Bréchet and Sonny Anderson for their commitment, their tremendous determination and involvement in the preparation of the professional team for the match against Le Havre.
