  • Switzerland makes a successful start to the home world championships in orienteering. Simona Aebersold secures gold over the long distance.
  • She distances the favorite Tove Alexandersson by more than 30 seconds.
  • Natalia Gemperle missed bronze by just 6 seconds.

Great jubilation in the Swiss team after the first medal decision at the home World Championships in orienteering in Flims Laax: Simona Aebersold from Bern won the gold medal over the long distance. The 25-year-old prevailed with a strong performance in front of Swede Tove Alexandersson (+ 31 seconds) and Norwegian Andrine Benjaminsen (+ 7:20 minutes).

For Switzerland it is the first success at a long-distance World Championships for women since Simone Niggli 10 years ago. Aebersold, who started the race with starting number 66, coped well in the difficult terrain. Around 500 vertical meters had to be covered over a distance of 11 km. Right from the start it was a duel between Aebersold and Alexandersson.

Exciting duel

But the Swiss was in the lead at every time measurement, even if the Swede was able to reduce the gap significantly towards the end of the race. In the end, however, favorite Alexandersson couldn’t get past Aebersold. “It was an incredibly tough race from start to finish,” said the new world champion after the race.

The remaining Swiss women also knew how to convince in front of the home fans. Natalia Gemperle (4th) missed the podium by just 6 seconds, Elena Roos finished the race in 6th place. Next on the program is the decision of the men over the long distance (live on SRF).
