BERLIN (Reuters) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Friday that Kyiv’s allies would set up a “coalition of capabilities” to provide long-range artillery to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

The leader was speaking after a meeting in Berlin with French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, intended in particular to iron out Franco-German differences over the conflict in Ukraine.

Profits from Russian assets frozen in Europe will be used to finance the purchase of weapons for Ukraine, Olaf Scholz also indicated.

“Our common goal is and remains to ensure that Ukraine can defend itself effectively against Russia’s invasion,” the German chancellor said.

“It is clear that we support Ukraine and that we are not at war with Russia,” he added.

For his part, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a meeting of the Weimar Triangle in the summer, stressing the importance of Paris, Berlin and Warsaw speaking with one voice, particularly on European security.

The Weimar Triangle, created in 1991 to seal German-Polish reconciliation, brings together France, Germany and Poland.

“Today’s meeting (…) clearly shows that some malicious rumors of differences between European capitals are exaggerated,” said Donald Tusk, who participated in the Weimar Triangle for the first time since his return to power.

“Today we spoke with one voice about the security of our continent.”
