Olaf Scholz will be sworn in on Wednesday as the successor to Angela Merkel. His visual change from Vice Vice President to Federal Chancellor.

Olaf Scholz (63, SPD) will be elected and sworn in as the new Federal Chancellor on Wednesday (December 8th). Like his predecessor, the native of Osnabrück has made an interesting visual change from his political beginnings with the Jusos to his office as Hamburg’s First Mayor to Federal Minister of Finance.

From shoulder-length curls up to 15 kilos less

The most obvious thing is to say goodbye to pounds and hair. Photos of him during his time as deputy federal chairman of the Jusos in the 1980s, which can be found on the net, even show Scholz with shoulder-length curls.

Hair got shorter in the 00s. For this, the politician gained weight. In 2009 he pulled the emergency brake and, according to his own statements, lost around 15 kilograms. “I did it for my wife,” said Scholz at the time of “Bild am Sonntag”. The excess kilos were constantly on the collar. “In Hamburg I jog on the Elbe, in Berlin in the Volkspark Friedrichshain,” said Scholz at the time. There are also treadmills in the ministry.

He’s still jogging today, and apparently it’s still very straightforward. “I don’t listen to music, I don’t have any measuring devices on me either,” he also doesn’t use a fitness app, said Scholz in the summer in conversation with the “Mopo”. “And I don’t really think about anything either.”
