Old driving license: should it be replaced?
You are not required to replace your old pink cardboard driving license with the new one which is in the form of a credit card. However, these old driving licenses will no longer be valid from January 19, 2033. Note that the driving license will be entitled to its dematerialized version in 2024.
When should you replace your old driving license with the new model?
The replacement of the old license can therefore wait until 2033 and for the moment you only need to request a new license if the old one is damaged or if you have lost it or had it stolen. You must also obtain a new permit in the event of a change in marital status (marriage or divorce).
You also have the option to make a request outside of these reasons. For example, it is better to have a new format driving license if you have to drive abroad outside of Europe (an international driving license is recommended).
How to obtain the new driving license model?
You can obtain a credit card format driving license by applying online at ANTS website. This same request must be made if your new format driving license expires (their validity is 15 years). For this you will need:
- an identity document,
- proof of address,
- an approved photo,
- where applicable, the declaration of loss or theft of the driving license.
This replacement is free (except in the event of loss or theft), but you will have to put in the old one to get the new one (otherwise, it will cost you 25 euros).
