“Old-fashioned Game of Thrones”: season 2 seen by the stars of House of the Dragon

The main actors of “House of the Dragon” discussed the challenges of the second season of the prequel to the series “Game of Thrones”.

After two years of waiting, House of the Dragon is finally preparing to make its comeback. The second season of the Game of Thrones prequel will indeed be offered on the new Max platform from June 17. On this occasion, fans of the series will be able to follow the war between two Targaryen clans to inherit the famous Iron Throne.

When the Targaryens compete for the Iron Throne

Broadcast during the summer of 2022, the first season of House of the Dragon was a great success, managing to take up the main elements of the original series but on a smaller scale. The plot of the program is in fact centered on a handful of characters and no longer takes place in the four corners of the kingdom of Westeros.

While the family war that the Targaryens will wage in this season will be the main thread of the plot, this season 2 will also have as its main theme mourning according to Emma D’Arcy in an interview given to our colleagues at Deadline :

I tried to take advantage of the suggestion made to me to physically represent mourning, its impact on relationships, desires, mental state… The writers have accomplished a tour de force this season by managing to intertwining personal emotions with the political ambitions of the characters. In my opinion, this is the real starting point of the series.

A return to basics for season 2

This season 2 will also be marked by a change in tone, described by Matt Smith as a return to “old-fashioned Game of Thrones”. “This time we will explore different worlds and different corners of the kingdom of Westeros” thus described the interpreter of Daemon Targaryen to Deadline.

A change which offered Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower) a more interesting filming experience than that of the first season. “It was huge for me. I got to go to Spain, to Wales, to Surrey. I’m delighted that people will finally be able to see me outside the castle” she confided with humor to our American colleagues.

The second season of House of the Dragon can now be found exclusively on the new Max streaming platform.
