Critics recently sharply criticized the film "Grease". Actress Olivia Newton-John thinks this is simply "silly".

The musical film "Grease" made Olivia Newton-John (72, "Xanadu") and her co-star John Travolta (66, "Pulp Fiction") celebrated screen stars in 1978. After criticism was loud that the film classic was misogynistic and did not represent enough diversity, Newton-John took a position on the podcast "A Life of Greatness".

"Grease" should "not be taken too seriously"

However, the British-Australian actress could not muster much understanding. "I think it's kind of silly in this particular case," she said in an interview with Sarah Grynberg. After all, the film was "made in the 70s through the 50s" and everyone had to "relax a bit and just enjoy things for what they are". "It was a play, it's a musical, it's fun. It's a fun musical that shouldn't be taken too seriously."

The retrospective criticism of "Grease", according to the British "Express", germinated after the musical film was broadcast on the BBC last Christmas. A spectator wrote for example on Twitter: "Oh man. I'm watching 'Grease', one of my favorite films, and you can tell that it was a time. Misogynist, sexist and with a slight tendency to rape."

Is Sandy being harassed by Danny?

In one of the controversial scenes, Danny (John Travolta) tries to get close to Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), which makes her visibly uncomfortable. At the end of the film, the main female character changes her appearance drastically and visually adapts to her boyfriend. "'Grease' is far too sexist and knows beyond measure why he should be banned from the screens," the "Express" quotes another user of the social media platform.

The musical romance "Grease" by director Randal Kleiser (74) is one of the most popular films of all time. In addition to the strip itself, the soundtrack also became an evergreen. It features the titles "You're the One That I Want" and "Summer Nights", both of which made it to the top of the British charts.
