NEWS THE FIGARO- The town hall of Paris has chosen the former director of the Festival d’Avignon to take the artistic direction of its flagship, which has been aground for several years.

And the winner is: Olivier Py. This is the name that comes out of the hat for the artistic direction of the Théâtre du Châtelet. It has been six months since the mayor of Paris launched a call for candidates, making it clear that it was an international call. Six months that the conjectures are built and that the date of appointment is postponed. The challenge: to succeed Ruth Mackenzie, landed in 2020, and Thomas Lauriot dit Prévost, who left the ship in July. Last wave of this adventure: the town hall of Paris has made a choice that does not satisfy everyone in the selection committee, where Valérie Chevalier and Sandrina Martins held the rope.

Olivier Py in Paris is not very new. From 2007 to 2012, the man directed the Odéon. Ten years have passed. He has since directed the Avignon Festival from 2013 to 2022. Le Châtelet is the musical theater of the City of Paris. Will it be enough for Olivier Py to have signed some excellent opera stagings – but also real flop…
