OlliOlli World: Our new review 3 weeks before the release


OlliOlli World is about to arrive but that did not prevent Roll7 and Private Division to put the game back in our hands to find out a little more before the release. The main purpose of this new trial was to show us the character creation system but also the online functions.

Previously on OlliOlli World

Given our first preview already available and the arrival of the complete test shortly, we are not going to relaunch in a complete presentation ofOlliOlli World. Be aware, however, that this is a 2.5D skate game that would almost like a platform game. Indeed, the primary goal is to reach the end of the level without falling.

Then things get more complex when you start wanting to fulfill the secondary objectives and above all improve your score by doing as many tricks as possible which make the balance more perilous, while risking losing the momentum necessary to overcome the next obstacle. . Several mechanics enrich the experience previous episodes while paradoxically managing to make the game more accessible.

The “World” of the title comes from new graphic style and storyline appearing here. Welcome additions to make the whole thing more welcoming, helping in passing to put in situation what we must do. It’s a little nicer to have an NPC who tells us in the course of a dialogue to look for the secret passage to find his friend than a dull text “Find the secret passage of the level” for example.

The first novelty of the version that we had in our hands for this article is the character creation. The editor is surprisingly complete from the start of the game and OlliOlli World takes care to be as inclusive as possible by not gendering the avatar or by proposing, for example, veils. And if the question of representation does not interest you, know all the same that you will have enough to make very original designs.

Indeed, if the choice is not huge as far as the character itself and his physique are concerned, the game largely makes up for it in terms of clothing and accessories to offer elements that range from very classic to modern, to go into the weirder or conceptual. The unlocking of new elements is also the third engine of the game after the desire to reach the end, then to score.

Progressing in the game unlocks new customization elements but also displays others, without unlocking them. On the other hand, we will explain to you how to obtain them and thus launch you into the quest for the perfect item to complete your look. Besides, the customization also extends to your board and its elements, as well as to the animations of your avatar.

Being alone but with many

OlliOlli World

A drip that will find all its usefulness in the other big part that we had to discover in this build, the asynchronous multiplayer. In the end, it remains a scoring game, and you might as well score more points than the others while having class. It will not be possible to play several at the same time at OlliOlli World, which therefore compensates with different rankings to push you to do better.

This happens, for example, through the rival system. Once the level is completed, the game will assign you a rival with a score above yours. While waiting to be defeated, his avatar will observe you at the beginning and end of the course. This does not bring anything concrete, except an additional motivation to improve its score.

The game also features a system of Gnarvana League. Each day, a new level is available and you have 24 hours to make the highest score possible by being in a group of twelve people. Your final position gives you points to move up to Bronze 2, Silver 4,… sometimes with new customizations for your avatar.

The illusion of creation

Another part of the multiplayer, but not only, concerns the Gnarvana Portal, a level generation system. It’s a bit of a shame, you can’t directly create your levels but you can at least generate them by choosing the environment, the length and the difficulty of your choice or by typing yourself 8 characters, random or not, for the seed .

As for the League, no secondary objectives or checkpoints, we are here to score the hard way. Solo, it already brings more content, which is always nice if you have already completed the levels of the campaign. But it especially makes sense if you share the most interesting creations with your friends, a community or on social networks.

Everyone who has the code will be able to try their luck and participate in the level ranking. The good news in all of this is that this system thus allows a form of crossplay since a code gives access to the same level and the same classification regardless of the version ofOlliOlli World used.

Smash and grab without being a platform-fighter

Let’s finish with a few details, starting with the content. This time we had access to all the levels of the first two regions but also to the third named Burntrock and characterized by its desert landscapes. In addition to the game which allows for narrower passages, the mechanism put forward is that of Smash-grabs, aerial obstacles that you can only cross in full grab of your board.

Note also that this new preview was made on PlayStation 5, where the old one was on PC. Inevitably, we expected it, the new console from Sony does not have the slightest problem to run the game, also planned on Switch. Finally, the animation of the characters during the dialogues always seems to be 5 frames per second, which we therefore take for an incomprehensible artistic choice given the perfect fluidity of the rest.

In short, it only remains for us to say that this final contact before the release totally comforts us in the idea thatOlliOlli World will be both a sequel that perfectly manages to advance its series while being a solid game in general and with a proposal different enough to get by in a few weeks amid the avalanche of expected releases.
