Microsoft added, on the Android version of its browser Edge, preliminary support for extensions. Currently only visible on the channel Canary of Edge mobile, this new feature should materialize on a larger scale within a few months.
Edge for Android will soon be able to benefit from extensions, similar to what the desktop version of the browser offers. In this case, the thing is currently only accessible to users with access to the beta program and the Canary version of Edge 123, and comes in the form of an option to be activated to allow downloading and installing extensions.
Extensions are coming to Edge for Android
More specifically, affected users can access a “Beta Extensions” page that already includes some popular extensions on Chromium-based browsers. Among them Dark Reader, Global Speed, or even uBlock Origin.
As pointed out Neowin, Edge for Android aligns itself with the desktop version of Microsoft’s browser, which has long supported numerous extensions, ranging from ad blockers to productivity tools. This new feature also goes in the right direction since it makes it possible to standardize the experience between the mobile and desktop versions of the browser. A plus for its users.
Edge now has an advantage over Chrome
This new feature also allows Edge to gain a small advantage over mobile Google Chrome, which does not yet support extensions. For the moment, Google has not started to communicate about the inclusion of this function on the mobile version of its browser. Microsoft’s could therefore retain this asset for a good while.
Note at the same time, and on a lighter note, that Microsoft recently changed the name of its mobile browser. Goodbye Microsoft Edge, place for a few weeks now at “Microsoft Edge: AI Browser”. A new name mainly intended to ride the buzz of generative AI.
In recent years, web browsers no longer limit themselves to facilitating access to web resources. Already keen to renew the browsing experience, they offer ever more personalized services, based on generative AI or a range of native extensions. But these value-added services, as innovative as they may be, have their counterpart. Repeatedly singled out for their questionable commercial practices, Chrome and Edge must face the tightening of the European regulatory framework. A boon for privacy-friendly alternative browsers such as Brave, Opera, Firefox and Vivaldi. What is the best web browser in February 2024? Discover our comparison to form your own opinion!
