SoReBo was founded according to the idea and concept of editor-in-chief Gaudenz Looser. In an initiative that is unique in Europe, it advocates non-hurtful language and reporting. The committee, headed by Zora Schaad, head of the One Love and Community departments, now comprises around 20 employees who, in addition to their functions, are committed to the Social Responsibility Board.

«The SoReBO has already achieved a lot in the first year: The entire editorial team has said goodbye to the generic masculine and switched to gender-neutral formulations and the pair form. The gender star is also used in individual departments, ”explains editor-in-chief Gaudenz Looser.

Professional organizations advise continuously for 20 minutes

Service boxes were also introduced, which at the end of articles on a wide variety of topics, such as racism or mental health, name organizations and contacts that offer advice and support. Muris Begovic, Managing Director of the Muslim Pastoral Care in Zurich: “Muslims repeatedly mention in our counseling sessions that they only found their way to us thanks to 20 minutes. They see the performance of our contact as a sign of inclusion. We have received significantly more phone calls since the service boxes were published. ”

In addition, 25 manuals were created that offer instructions on how to deal with non-offensive language. Various external specialist agencies and stakeholders’ representatives were involved in the creation of the manuals, such as victim support, representatives of LGBTQI + organizations or organizations in the field of anti-Semitism and racism. Regular newspaper reviews are also held with these organizations in order to ensure a quality control of the journalism of 20 minutes and further development of the manuals.

Pictures shouldn’t hurt either

The advice given by the Social Responsibility Board extends far beyond the use of the written language. A non-hurtful visual language is also a central concern. In the event of violent incidents, static images are increasingly used instead of moving images, context boxes and trigger warnings are used generously in video contributions and other types of symbolic images are used, for example in the case of domestic violence.

SoReBo leader Zora Schaad: «We advise our colleagues in their daily editorial work and lead fruitful, factual and committed discussions about the choice of images, formulations and titles. The aim is to find a compromise that allows both a crisp headline and meets the need for media victim protection. ”

In the new edition of the industry magazine Schweizer Journalist: in, which will appear on Saturday, the Social Responsibility Board will be honored with the first-ever special prize. The special award complements the choice of journalists of the year and honors people, teams, editorial offices or work that have attracted attention in a special way through their commitment, new formats or special reports.

According to the editors of the Swiss journalist: in, the Social Responsibility Board has developed a practical and consistent approach to solving numerous problems that currently concern almost all editors in Switzerland. In addition, the inclusion of selected specialist organizations and the transparent transfer of the knowledge gained to other editorial offices make the board a model project for the entire industry.

Training institutes and other editorial offices interested in SoReBo

The work of the Social Responsibility Board of 20 minutes arouses keen interest not only from the participating organizations, other editorial offices or affected readers. The management was also able to present its activities and manuals at training institutes for prospective journalists.

«From my point of view, as the head of a journalism course, the SoReBo is an exciting source for reflecting on practical professional standards and responsibility in journalism. As a journalism researcher, I see SoReBo as an innovative form of professional self-regulation », says Prof. Dr. Guido Keel, director of the Institute for Applied Media Studies at the ZHAW.
