Tensions exploded on the night of June 28 to 29 in several cities in France, two days after the death of Nahel, 17, killed by a police officer during a traffic check. On Snapchat, thanks to the card, videos filmed by Internet users testify to this.
Nanterre, Garges-lès-Gonesses, Pantin, Toulouse… several cities were the scene of violence and degradation on the night of June 28 to 29, two days after the shooting death of a 17-year-old teenager in his car by a policeman in Nanterre. Many videos that can attest to these tensions are publicly circulating on the Snapchat social network. On the Snap Map, in the Paris region, by clicking on the “hot” points of the map, dozens of videos of fires, burnt-out cars or police officers appear.
The Snap Map is a useful geolocation tool that can detect certain areas where users are massively publishing videos at the same time. During crowd movements like those of the past few days, it turns into a kind of ” heat map (heat map) on which areas appear darker as post volume increases.

Tensions all over France
It is in Nanterre that these snaps are most numerous, in bright red on the map. In the city that saw the homicide unfold, in addition to defaced street furniture and burnt-out cars, clashes erupted between law enforcement and residents. The videos were mainly shot in the Pablo Picasso district, along rue des Rosiers and at the roundabout des Bergères.

Other municipalities in Ile-de-France have been affected, as can also be seen on the Snap Map. According to the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, 2,000 police officers were mobilized on the evening of June 28 in the Paris region, to ensure the maintenance of order, after tensions the previous night. In Pantin, in Seine-Saint-Denis, firefighters intervened to control the flames. In Viry-Châtillon, in Essonne, a social network user films a completely charred bus this morning. In Colombes, while the mayor, Patrick Chaimovitch (EELV), called for calm in a press release, witnesses shared on SnapChat numerous fire starts.
Clashes and damage also took place in the rest of France on the night of June 28. On the Snapchat map, in Toulouse, yet nearly 700 km from Nanterre, clashes and fires were filmed, especially in the popular district of La Bagatelle, also represented in bright red on the Snap Map. Similar images were shot in the Lille metropolis and in Amiens.

“The Call for Calm” by Emmanuel Macron
In response to these tensions, the President of the Republic convened an interministerial crisis unit on June 29 and denounced “unjustifiable violence against the institutions of the Republic”. In a tweet published that same day, Emmanuel Macron called for “ reverence, justice and calm” while thanking the police and firefighters mobilized during this night of clashes.
