Spectacular accident on the Tauern Autobahn near Rennweg: A truck driver lost control of his vehicle, which weighed several tons, and hurled himself into the oncoming lane. Drivers were just able to prevent something worse from happening.
A Bosnian professional driver was driving his truck and semi-trailer on the A10 towards Villach on Wednesday night when, for an unknown reason, he suddenly swerved towards Rennweg. The vehicle, which weighed several tons, then collided with a concrete guardrail at the construction site there and began to skid. The truck landed in the oncoming lane, whereupon the truck broke through the center guard rail with full force, slid 80 meters further and finally came to a stop in the oncoming lane between the first lane and the hard shoulder. Several car drivers had the presence of mind to get out of the way just in time and prevent a fatal crash. The driver had to go to the hospital. One of the cars was still a total loss and came to a standstill – it was seriously damaged when it drove over the accident parts and had to be towed away. The 51-year-old driver of the truck was taken to hospital in Spittal an der Drau with injuries of an unspecified degree. The Tauern Autobahn remained closed for more than two hours.
