A multi-day strike is planned at a major Amazon warehouse in the Basque Country.
It is not uncommon to hear in the news about the sometimes difficult relationship between Amazon and its employees, including a fairly significant employee attrition rate. And if some tend to criticize the working conditions in which the employees of the American giant find themselves, the question of salaries can also be addressed. Like right now in a site of Jeff Bezos’ firm located between France and Spain.
A strike before Epiphany
Discontent is growing in the Amazon center of Trapagaran, located in the Basque Country, on the border between France and Spain. This site, in which some 160 people currently work, will in fact be shut down for a few days at the start of next year.
More precisely, the LAB union has planned a strike which will take place before Epiphany, on January 6. Employees will not work like this on January 3, 4 and 5. And the date was not chosen at random, because Epiphany is a celebration often more important than Christmas for our Spanish neighbors, celebrations during which gifts are given to children.
Salary increases requested
The objective is therefore surely to put management in difficulty at one of the most important times of the year in terms of orders. Employees launched this movement in order to obtain a salary increase exceeding that granted by Amazon.
“ We want salary increases in line with inflation. Salary increases above the 3% per year planned until 2025 » thus indicated to Reuters union leader Gotzon Mardarats. Amazon, questioned by the press agency, for its part indicated that the salaries paid to the site’s employees were ” competitive “. A first strike movement had already paralyzed the warehouse in recent days.
