THE FILM OF THE DAY

In 1956, The Prisoner of the Desert marked John Ford’s return to his favorite genre. By adapting the eponymous novel by Alan Le May, he stages a major western – both complex and modern. His camera sublimates the desert landscapes of Monument Valley, whose beauty contrasts radically with the dark personality of the protagonist played by John Wayne.

For their 16th collaboration, John Ford offers his favorite actor his best role: that of a man thirsty for revenge, racist, violent and unscrupulous. In addition, the director represents the Indian people with a dignity that the classic western has too often taken away from them.

Considered John Ford’s masterpiece, both in its themes and in its aesthetics, The Prisoner of the Desert has become a reference for many New Hollywood filmmakers such as Tarantino, Scorsese and Wim Wenders. Quintessence of Fordian cinema, it is therefore one of the best westerns of all time, as evidenced by its prestigious average of spectator ratings of 4/5 on AlloCiné.
